2013 September NZ day 9 Christchurch

Long Trip – Day 9 Christchurch to Dunedin September 2013

At night I paid a short visit to Christchurch because I couldn’t fall asleep. At 7 am I went there for the second time. Unbelievably, the city destroyed by earthquakes in 2010/2011 is still in ruins. Multiple closed streets, one way roads only, contractions builders could be see everywhere. I was surprised by the price of parking places. It was around 50 c/ hour whereas in Wellington – 3,4 nzd/ hour. What also surprised me was the fact that after 2,3 years, city centre is full of ruins or buildings partly demolished. I saw only a few new or renovated buildings but many empty plots. Some buildings had only facades remaining, supported by different constructions, the rest of walls demolished.
I couldn’t spend more than 1,5 hour in the city as I had over 200 km to Dunedin, the weather was still good so I decided to go. The first part of the road trip had great views, mountains covered in snow. I thought the storm was only in Christchurch area but on the way I saw many trees with roots on the ground, almost the whole small forest was destroyed by wind power. Oamaru is near Dunedin, it’s an amazing playground for children and adults. I decided to stop at Moeraki Boulders - spherical stones. This is an incredible place, best to see during sunset or sunrise.

In the evening, I’ve arrived to Dunedin. It was raining so I just met my friends and we chatted till late.
