2013 Long Trip New Zealand Caves

Long Trip – Day 4 Waitomo Caves September 2013

There are a lot of adventure activities in Taupo. Unfortunately, weather wasn’t good for hiking. I’m familiar with quad biking, zorbing and similar activities because of my job so it’s no longer an attraction for me.
The next stop was Waitomo where caves with glow worms can be found. These incredible larvas are perfect killers. They create a kind of a web, 20-30 mucus and silk threads which hang down. Glow worms hide behind it and during the night attract insects emitting blue light. Many companies offer various activities in different caves. There is i-SITE too. Watch out as before you will find advertisements like: caves ticket here or information here. The best is to find i-SITE information sign, not normal information sign and ask them for help. In Waitomo the company Cave World
www.caveworld.co.nz  offered 2 for 1 for walking tour into the cave because I rented a car with Jucy. They have only two options to see caves. The second one is black water rafting, in tubes for around 2 hours which seems like more fun. Inside the cave I saw a lot of glow worms. It was an amazing experience. Caves are family owned. Each company from Waitomo shows you a different cave.

Information office suggested to see worms on my own for free in Ruakuri Natural tunnel ( a part of marked Ruakuri Bush Walk). There is a car park, free toilets but no overnight camping allowed. It seemed many cars parked there to stay overnight despite the fact it’s illegal. Aranui Cave entrance is nearby and one may visit it for free after 7 pm.
Woodlyn Park seemed to be an interesting place nearby offering accommodation inside an old plane or in train.

I highly recommend to go for a night Ruakuri Bushwalk. Glow worms can be found near two first bridges 5- 10 minute walk from the entrance, on high river banks. Torch is needed. Switch is off to see amazing glow worms.
