2013 October, Long Trip - South Korea DMZ on budget

2013 October, Long Trip - DMZ on budget

While travelling on budget I always try to find a way not pay extra for something I could organise myself. Travelling without any agency allows me to visit each place at my own pace.

Unfortunately, in order to visit JSA you need to book a tour. However, if you want to visit DMZ only (the Observatory, the 3rd Tunnel, the station  and the Freedom Bridge) you can do it yourselves.

According to information from a tourist centre in DMZ you can get there from Seoul Station, bus no. 909 or 9710 to Munsan or by train - Gyeongeui Line (Seoul Station - DMC - Daegok - Unjeong - Geumchon - Wollong - Paju - Munsan Station. Commuting train operates from Munsan Station to Dorasan Station)

From Munsan Intercity Bus Terminal you need to take a bus no.94 to DMZ (Imjingak Tourist Resort). The bus runs every 30 minutes and should take you there within 10 min.
There is a tourist information and you can arrange your trips to:
- 3rd Infiltration Tunnel discovered in 1978, one out of 4 discovered. There is a screening room and the tunnel offered 2 kinds of tours (a walking tour 700 KRW, an elevator tram to the tunnel 1700 KRW),
- Dora Observatory is free of charge and you can see North Korea, Propaganda and Freedom Villages too if the weather is good.
- Dorasan station is the most northern station of South Korea.
- Odusan Unification Observatory on Mt.Odusan is the closest point between North Korea and DMZ.
- Imjingok has a kind of a tourist centre, you can reach it by car or a shuttle bus. There is also the Freedom Bridge, a steam locomotive, the Bell of Peace, the Gyeonggi Peace Center and much more.

Unfortunately, I bought a guided tour as I went to JSA too so information collected above are from local guides.

If you did the tour by yourself, please add some information as comments.
