2009 May - Poland - Hel

Hel - a nice town

Hel – no it isn’t a spelling mistake, it is a name of one Polish city in the north of Poland, near the Baltic Sea.

Hel Peninsula is called ‘Polish scythe’ because it looks like a scythe from the air. You could get there by car, train or ferry. This time I decided to go there by ferry from Gdansk. In summer they offer cheap ferries to Hel called water trams.

I am sorry but they still haven’t had an English version.
My weekend trip I started near the Neptune Fountain to meet with my friends.

We went to Motlawa River, passed the Crane and near Hilton Hotel we took the water tram to Hel. The trip took as about 2 hours we passed Wisloujscie Fortres, Gdansk shipyards and Wessterplatte.

Hel is an old city which was defended for almost a month on the beginning of the Second World War.

This was always a military place. Now it is a very busy summer spot where many people enjoy holiday and stay for weekends.
Since 1999 there has been a seal centre taking care of those animals.

The first one was ‘Balbina’ and now they have about 7 seals and there are specials shows, education programs and so on.

We were in the Museum of Fishing which is located in a former church, visited a lighthouse dating from the early 19th century. We stayed for a moment in few military objects.

Some information you could find there.

We stayed all day in this nice town, next day we started our walk to Wladyslawowo.

It was about 33km but we decided to enjoy the weather and see something around so it took us 2 days and we had a break in Kuznica. Part of the way led trough dunes, another part trough forests and a small one near the road.
