2013 September Long Trip NZ Arrowtown

Long Trip - Day 17 Arrowtown and Glenorchy

Wanaka is connected with Queenstown by 2 different routes. The first one is longer but less hilly and winding.

The second one goes via Crown Range, only 60 km of serpentines, especially near Queenstown and incredible views and viewpoints to park along the way. The highest point has 1076 m. The views are amazing only when the weather is good.
On the way the are few old 'gold towns', places where people moved because of gold rush. One of them is Arrowtown.
The centre of the town is still as it was long time ago. Only cars passing the streets destroy the ambience. Remains of Chinese settlement can be found a little bit further.
You can rent equipment and get directions to try your luck in finding gold in the river - 2 nzd + 10 nzd deposit.
Some companies organise trips to other ghost towns which are hidden and abandoned. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't good and I couldn't go there. Macetown is situated 16 km from Arrowtown  - in summer it is possible to walk there and camp there freely. This time even tour operator refused to go to Macetown as water level in the river was too high for they 4X4 cars.

The day wasn't over so I decided to visit Glenorchy. It's behind Queenstown, at the end of the road. From here they organise a lot of walks.
This place is famous as they shot here some scenes for Hobbit and Lord of the Ring.
