Long Trip – Day 3
Lady Knox September 2013
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal
Wonderland is open from 8:30. The ticket costs 32.50 NZ$ but you can get 10 %
discount with a voucher from tourists brochures. Please check with i-SITE.
There’s no town close to this place, only a petrol station opened from 7:00 am
with toilets open 24h.
Tourist can see
only a very small part of the 18 sq. km. park. The area is covered with
collapsed craters, cold and boiling mud pools, water and steaming fumaroles. At
10:15 every day is a show. They stimulate eruption of one geyser, Lady Knox. As
the show is in different part of the reserve it is nice to return and see all
incredible formations once more. One of the most famous pools is the Champagne
Pool with temperature of 74 degrees. Outside, you’ll find mud pools which can
be seen without entrance ticket. The weather wasn’t as good as yesterday but it
was still warm. From Wai-O-Tapu, I drove to Taupo to hike a little bit before
Tongariro Crossing. On the way to the
town, spectacular Huka Falls and many jet boats on the river. I only did a
small walk and decided to visit i-SITE and the town which is very small, food
streets, clothes streets, another with petrol stations etc.
Reids Farm – an interesting, spacious, free campsite/ campervan overnight
parking left to the world by his previous owner who liked backpackers. It can
be found on Hukka Falls Road, upstream the Hukka Lodge towards Taupo ( 3 km
town). River water can be drank after boiling. Good area for kayakers. No
toilets.
