Long Trip - Day 10 Dunedin September 2013
Today, my friends decided to guide me through the city. Dunedin is a large city, never destroyed by any earthquake. Many old buildings and the oldest university in New Zealand. There is also an old, interesting building of railway station with a museum, it offers an old train ride for tourists ( to Oamaru). The city is surrounded by small hills. We visited the university area and botanic
gardens too with impressive variety of parrots and native birds. One of the them welcomed guests with loud 'Hello'. We also went near Quarantine Island where all immigrants had to go through quarantine period before entering the mainland.
We spent almost all day on Otago Peninsula . Around 5pm we arrived at Sandfly Bay to watch yellow-eyed penguins. At the end of this beach you'll find a special hide to observe them from distance as they're extremely shy. It is suggested to visit it 2 hours before sunset. We saw only 2 penguins the rest left the ocean before us as the hunt during the day and come back to their nesting areas back to dunes. It was an amazing experience to see how they climb up quite steep dunes or play together. Walking on the beach, watch out for sea lions as they're quite unpredictable and aggressive if you disturb them. I also saw some fur seals resting on the rocks.
