2014 January, The Long Trip - Thailand, Kanchanaburi
Buses from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi run from the South Bus Terminal. One way ticket can be bought at platform number 10. Bus numbers between 81-1 and 81-36 (2 hour trip) and 81-37 and 81-69 (3 hour trip). The ticket costs 110 THB (2.45e) and buses run every 15 minutes. There are also 2 trains per day from Hua Lamphong Station for 100 THB (2.24e) but it was too early for me:-). Minivans from the Victory Monument are for 110 THB + 100THB extra charge for a backpack.
The bus terminal in Kanchanaburi is around 1 km from the area packed with tourists, guesthouses, restaurants and a train station. The first guesthouse I found was Nirvana Forest Kan, tel. 034 671 515 with excellent wi-fi, clean rooms and friendly staff for 350 THB (7.83e) per night, double room with fan. From there it was another 2km to the bridge. The place is famous because of a movie 'The River Kwai Bridge' It was built by Japanese (they used war prisoners) to connect Thailand and Burma by railway. Thousands of people died during this time.
