2013 November, The Long Trip, Hiroshima
I spent only one day in Hiroshima. I arrived at 6 am and left at 11 pm with another night bus. A tourist information is located next to the Hiroshima Railway Station and provides all necessary information.
I took a streetcar ( a kind of a tram) - a day ticket plus a return ticket for Miyajima Island cost 840 JPY ( single ticket cost starts from 150 JPY). It took an hour by line no 2. Miyajima is famous because of the O-tori Gate and deer:) In the morning, at high tide, the gate stands in the water so I climbed up Mt. Misen Observatory which is currently renovated but it still offers some good places with view points.
When I returned to the gate, at low tide I could walk through it.It is a kind of a sacred place, people left coins there. There was a lot of coins attached to the gate's beams and much more on the ground.
I took the ferry back and another streetcar to The A-bomb Dome. There is a stop named 'A-bomb Dome' so it's easy to find it. The Hiroshima Prefecture Commercial Exhibition Hall was designed by a Czech architect. The atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima at 8:15 am on the 6th August 1945. It was one of the few building left standing after explosion. Now, it is a World Heritage Site. I chose to visit it in the evening and the place looked somehow amazing. Nearby is a museum, the Peace Bell and the Children Peace Monument.
Nearby is also the Hiroshima Castle with an old tower at the corner. The tower was rebuilt in 1958.
Near Hiroshima is the Mazda Museum where you can visit the factory. It is closed on weekends and public holidays and a reservation in advance is needed.
